This morning I was reading in Luke 9 when Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. Beginning in verse 29, it tells the story of how Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and then suddenly two men appeared … Moses and Elijah … and talked with Jesus. I have read this passage many, many times, but this morning a phrase jumped out at me as I read it: Luke 9:31 (NLT) – “They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.” It dawned on me that there was a topic of discussion. Most of the time when I read this passage I focused on the glorious appearance of Moses and Elijah. But they had a business item on their agenda … Jesus’ exodus.
Jesus’ departure from this world (including the crucifixion) was a planned event. God the Father masterfully planned this event that would benefit all of mankind. However, this did not mean that this was going to be an easy road to travel for Jesus. This special conference was called – God the Father, Jesus (God the Son), Moses, and Elijah. If you were able to listen to the conversation, I wonder what you would have heard. Did Jesus hear encouragement from Elijah? Did Moses add his insight into the “exodus?” Did they discuss details? Was Judas’ name brought up? Was Peter’s name mentioned? Man, it would have been interesting “listening in” on that conversation.
Like everyone, I have had my difficulties in life. God never intended for me to have to face those difficulties alone. That is why God has made Himself available to me 24/7 for a special conference. I can meet Him on my “mountain” … and I can bring along Pam and Caleb if I want. I have not had other “resurrected” saints join me on the mountain … although I could easily list a few I would like to see. Most of the time … in these “mountaintop-special-conferences” God encourages me … gives me hope … corrects me if necessary … even discusses details. But in the end … I come down the mountain equipped to face the future. Man, you got to love those mountaintop prayer times with God!
