This meditation is going to be primarily scriptures that talk about the name of God and what it means to us. I hope you will look up these scriptures and highlight them in your Bible and reflect on them.
God’s name implies “the whole combination of divine perfections.”
Psalm 52:9 tells us that God’s name is good. “I will thank you forever because you have done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.”
Psalm 135:3 tells us that the LORD’s name is pleasant. “Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to His name for it is pleasant.”
Psalm 135:13-14 tells us that the name of the LORD endures forever. “Your name, O LORD endures forever, Your renowned O LORD throughout all ages. For the LORD will vindicate His people and have compassion on His servants.”
Psalm 8:1,9 begins and ends telling us that God’s name is majestic. “O LORD, our LORD, how majestic is Your name in all the earth.”
Psalm 111:9 tells us that the name of the LORD is holy and awesome. “He sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever. Holy and awesome is His name!”
Psalm 148:13 says that the name of the LORD is exalted. “Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted: His majesty is above earth and heaven.”
Psalm 91:14-16 that through His name we can experience answers to prayer and deliverance from the powers of evil that surround us. “Because he holds fast to Me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows My name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life, I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”
Philippians 2: 9-10 tells us that the day will come when at the mention of His name every knee shall bow. “Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.”
Psalm 20 tells us that there is protection in the name of the LORD. “May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you.” (us!) “May He grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans! May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God, set your banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions! Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving might of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” (vs. 4-7).
Psalm 54:1 David prays, “O God, save me by Your name, and vindicate me by Your might.”
Psalm 72:18-19 the writer tells us that God’s name is glorious. “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory! Amen and Amen!
Psalm 83:16-18 God is petitioned to cause shame to come on the faces of those who do evil so that they will seek the name of the LORD. “Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name, O LORD. Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever, let them perish in disgrace, that they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth.”
Psalm 96:8-10, we are admonished to give the LORD the glory that is due to His name. “Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness! Tremble before Him all the earth! Say among the nations “The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; He will judge the peoples with equity.”
Proverbs 18:10 Listen to these words: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”
Isaiah 26: 3, 7-9, we read that we have peace and that His name is the desire of our soul. “You will keep Him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You. The path of the righteous is level; You may level the way of the righteous. In the paths of your judgment. O LORD, we wait for You; Your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul. My soul yearns for you in the night, my spirit within me earnestly seeks You. For when Your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.”
Jeremiah 10: 6-7, the prophet tells us that God’s name is mighty. “There is none like you, O LORD; You are great, and Your name is great in might. Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all the kingdoms there is none like You.”
Ezekiel 36:20-23, God himself says – “Therefore, say to the house of Israel, thus says the LORD God: ‘It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of My holy name, which has been profaned among the nations, wherever you went. And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD,” declares the LORD GOD, when through you I vindicate My holiness before their eyes.”
Micah 5:4 puts it like this: “And He (Messiah) shall stand and feed His flock, in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now, He shall be great to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 4:10, the Apostle Peter declares – “Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead – by Him this man stands before you whole.”
Revelation 19:11-12, the Apostle John describes what he saw – “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called FAITHFUL AND TRUE, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems, and He has a name written that no one knows but Himself.”
Lastly, in Revelation 22:4-5, John wrote, “They will see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there. They will need no light of the sun, nor lamp, for the LORD God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
What a glorious note to end on! Moses was not permitted to see God’s face and live. But all of God’s redeemed people will be so perfected by God’s grace that we will see the face of our LORD, who has sealed us by His Holy Spirit, and we will live and reign with Him forever!
I pray that all of these scriptures about His name has blessed you and that you will meditate on them frequently.
In His glorious name,
Pastor Leonard
